Did you catch the Super bowl this year? With no lions in sight, I watch the Super bowl as much for the ads as I do the football. I am always amazed at the corporations that spend millions on commercials that may never be seen again. I guess it’s hard to resist a chance to create a powerful brand impression in the minds of each year's large U.S. television audience.

This year Chrysler bet it all on a commercial, "Halftime in America," that serves to associate the Chrysler brand with American values of grit and determination. Clint Eastwood resurrects his autoworker character from the movie "Gran Torino" to deliver a message of hope that the city of Detroit is leading this country out of despair. The message is powerful and worth watching if you have a minute:

The ad never mentions the brands aloud, and only displays them at the very end. No matter where your car allegiance lay at the beginning, if you are American, then by the end of the commercial you are on board with Clint, America, and finally, Chrysler brands.

Of course, you cannot mention America in an election year without someone seeing it as a political statement. Which worked well for Chrysler. The news coverage and debate about this commercial continued for several days following the Super bowl, increasing views of the ad and emphasizing Chrysler's brand.

If it is a political message, one has to wonder which political party would want to take a stance against recovery in America, no? Besides, it is unlikely anyone at Chrysler intended to support a particular political party. Voters in both parties drive Dodge Caravans.

I feel proud that Detroit was highlighted in this way. The downturn was particularly rough for us here, and manufacturing has not fully recovered yet, but against all odds, my friends and neighbors are still building some of the best vehicles in the world right here in America.
